As we swim into the cave, through a pool of emerald blue cool water, we will light our lanterns and the magic of this place will appear.

After a mile hike along the jungle trail we come to the Rio Blanco waterfall, which flows through wide, shallow pools and gentle cascades formed of smooth slabs of mudstone and sandstone, before pouring over a 15 foot ledge into a deep pool. This is a favorite jumping spot for local thrill-seekers—we may want to give it a try!

We will head out on a dirt road for a two mile trip to Cotton Tree Lodge’s neighbor, Santiago Chub’s farm in Santa Anna Village. Along the way we’ll steer our horses into the bush and explore jungle trails—going places too difficult to access on foot. We’ll pass traditional thatch homes and greet the neighbors as we ride by.

Usabia Bo opens her home to you, ushering you across the dirt floor of the kitchen and around her mud stove. Help her shuck dried corn and learn how she boils, washes, and grinds the kernels into dough suitable for shaping into round tortillas.
